OLIVE GROVE MEMORIAL ROUTE IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF SIMON GREGORČIČ
DISTANCE: 11 km
DURATION: 3,5 h
DIFFICULTY: easy
SURFACE: tarmac, forest path, macadam
DESCRIPTION:
This olive grove memorial route is dedicated to the Slovenian poet and priest Simon Gregorčič who served in Branik (Rihemberk at the time) between 1873 and 1882. We set off from the carpark near the Post Office or the Kulturni dom and go up past the church. There we turn right into the vineyards. In Sveti Martin the path turns towards the Vipava Valley and then in Brje it again turns towards Branik. The picturesque route leads walkers through vineyards, olive groves and fields where the poet himself walked. On the way there are beautiful views of Castle Rihemberk with the Karst behind it, the Vipava Valley, the Trnovo plateau and the plain of Gorica. In late autumn, on the feast of St. Martin, the local community holds an organised walk along the Olive grove memorial path.
