THE WALK BETWEEN TWO CASTLES – FROM RIHEMBERK TO DORNBERG

DISTANCE: 7 km (in one direction)
DURATION: 2.5 h
DIFFICULTY: easy
SURFACE: tarmac, forest path, macadam

DESCRIPTION:

The vanished Castle Dornberg is one of the mightiest castles of the 11th century in Slovenia. The castle experienced a turbulent history. In the early 16th century it had a role against the Turks. We can see the remains of its large outer walls in the picturesque village of Tabor above Dornberk. Only a few kilometres away, Rihemberk Castle, the largest castle in the region of Gorica emerged a few centuries later. It experienced a different fate and we can walk through it and climb the high tower. The walk of two castles ascends from Rihemberk Castle along the Branik–Komen road and leads the hiker to the pretty village of Pedrovo. At the end of the village we turn downhill into the woods and come out above the vineyards and olive trees. We enter Tabor through the preserved southern portal of the old defensive wall from the time of Turkish incursions. The first part of the walk is along a main road. It is possible to return by train (Dornberk–Branik) or other form of transport.
